After 100 years of independence, a new and bold generation of young Irish artists is redefining folk music and reflecting on the impact of their colonial history. The film follows the new surge of alternative folk and traditional musicians who are making music “to scare the priests and politicians”.
As they create melancholic new sounds, they redefine and problematise the form itself, shaping culture according to their own vision. Some of the Irish musicians featured in the film include The Mary Wallopers, The Deadlians, Poor Creature, Negro Impacto and Lankum.
The film premiered at the 2025 Locarno Festival, where it won the Grand Prix Semaine de la Critique – Prix SRG SSR as part of its eponymous independent section.
