Film screening and panel discussion
On Monday, 4 May at 7 pm at the Surogatkino KIC, there will be an evening of the FILMBOOK series with a screening of Joe Wright’s feature film Atonement.
Atonement is an adaptation of Ian McEwan's 2001 novel.
Wright's direction glamorously visualises the emotional complexity of its characters, offering rich ground for discussion on responsibility, lying, memory, impulsive behaviour, and the consequences of a single, fateful mistake. All of this, along with the question of where our own desires might lead us, will be explored in the post-screening discussion.
The film has been nominated for 14 BAFTA Awards, 7 Oscars and 7 Golden Globes, as well as 3 European Film Awards. It won 5 BAFTA Awards (Best Film and Production Design), 2 Golden Globes (Best Motion Picture and Best Original Score), and an Oscar for Best Original Score.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring writer Korana Svilar; Dr. Sandra Ferenčić Ćuk, a psychiatrist trained in psychodrama, psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy, transactional analysis and Gestalt therapy; and Associate Professor of Arts Katarina Zrinka Matijević, film director and university professor, programme curator and moderator of the discussion.
Film Synopsis:
The story begins at an English aristocratic estate between the two World Wars, where the adolescent Briony, a girl with literary ambitions, witnesses a series of contradictory events and misinterprets the relationship between her sister, Cecilia, and the family's employee, Robbie. Driven by her imagination and a desire for order, Briony makes an accusation that will tear the lives of everyone involved apart: Cecilia and Robbie are devastated by the obstacles and social consequences, while Briony is confronted by the growing realisation of the weight of her lie. The film follows their fates over the decades - from youthful indiscretion to a mature age filled with remorse - raising the question of whether we can atone for the cardinal mistakes we knowingly make.
