A commemoration for painter Goranka Vrus Murtić will be held on Wednesday, 25 February at 5 pm at the Cultural and Information Centre (KIC), Preradovićeva 5, Zagreb.
Croatian painter Goranka Vrus Murtić passed away in Zagreb on 1 February 2026. She was born in Velika Gorica on 22 February 1937. She studied art in Zagreb, graduating in the early 1960s from the Academy of Fine Arts in the class of Oton Postružnik. The painter continued her training at Krsto Hegedušić’s Master Workshop, where she worked until 1962. Her work is marked by a pronounced sensitivity to colour, dynamic brushwork, an expressive use of materials, and a tendency toward a lyrical, colourist mode of expression.
Alongside painting, Goranka Vrus Martić was also active in other fields of applied art. She produced notable works in enamel and tapestry, and was particularly active in theatre, where she collaborated with director Vlado Habunek as a costume and set designer. After the death of her husband, painter Edo Murtić, in 2005, she devoted herself to managing his foundation and publicly supported the initiative to establish a museum dedicated to his work, with the intention of donating artworks to its future collection.
From 1972 onwards, she was closely associated with the Forum Gallery as one of its members, participating in shaping its programme and exhibition policy during the period of workers’ self-management.
Speakers at the commemoration will include the Milan Bešlić, art critic; Branko Franceschi, Director of the National Museum of Modern Art; and the painter’s sons, Marko and Ranko Murtić.
