In 1971, hundreds of young people occupied abandoned military barracks in Copenhagen and founded the self-proclaimed free city of Christiania, a wild experiment in freedom and community which over time grew into an alternative to the dominant social order. Tracing the radical democracy and unbridled creativity of its residents and hippies, and the community's distinctive episodes, such as the gangs' entry into the hashish trade or the battle for Pusher Street, Christiania offers a fascinating insight into Danish cultural history, filled with the vivid stories that have shaped this unique counter-cultural community and its constant questioning of the boundaries of personal freedom over more than fifty years.

Reviews:
‘A lucid and gentle portrait of Christiania that transcends nostalgia to explore how a utopian community can survive once its founding ideals are confronted with reality.’ Steve Rickinson, Modern Times Review
