For teenager Charley Brewster, nothing beats watching an old horror film late at night. When two men move into his neighbourhood and he witnesses them carrying a coffin at night, as a seasoned horror connoisseur he can have no doubt they are a vampire and his accomplice.
The only person who can help him catch them is actor Peter Vincent, the host of Charley's favourite TV show, Fright Night. But there's one small problem: Vincent doesn't actually believe vampires exist…
Fright Night is the directorial debut of future prominent horror genre author Tom Holland, based on a screenplay he wrote himself. Upon its premiere it was largely well received by critics, and over time its reputation has grown further, and today it has cult status and is considered one of the best horror films of the 1980s. The reasons for this lie in its optimal postmodernist blending of the comedy and horror genres, and of self-aware (meta)humour with dread. There are also the excellent special effects, which still do not seem dated today, and the highly praised performance by Chris Sarandon as the charismatic vampire. It is also worth mentioning that the character Peter Vincent's name was a portmanteau of the first and last names of two legendary horror actors, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price, and that in 1985, Fright Night was the highest-grossing horror film after A Nightmare on Elm Street 2.
